[V8] A8's

I have a 99 A8 with a 6 spd in it. I have had two v8's and two A8's I love them both but they are completely different vehicles. I love my A8 now (especially with the manual trans) - but the v8 has a very special place in my heart. You MUST get one in good repair or it will eat your wallet just like the v8 has.
Make sure that if it has 100k (most do) that it has the following:
- Transmission replaced or at least service history of fluid/filter changes - in my experience a v8 trans (ZF 4HP24A) will go to 200k + and a A8 trans (ZF 5HP24A) will only make it to 100 - 125k.
- The front suspension bits have been replaced
- The timing belt (with all the rollers, tensioners and water pump) has been done.
- Replace the plastic block to cooler pipe that fails at 100k (do it while you have the TB apart)
- Fuel pump will go between 100 and 125k.
The 97 to 99 has the ABZ motor (my favorite of all audi v8 motors) which is basically the same style as the PT/ABH on the v8. The 2000 to 2003 cars have a different motor with 5v heads - good motors with slightly more power, but the cam adjusters on those tend to break - not worth it IMO. Other than that the car is wonderful and has an aluminum body that won't rust like the v8.
For reference - I sold my other 99 A8 for $5500 with all the above done on it recently - I had done all the work and probably lost some money on it but it needed to go to fund the 6 spd transplant on the other one. Also, Front end parts tend to be expensive on these cars, so make sure you can buy those parts and still have less in the car than it is worth.

1998-2000 A8's can be had for the price of Verboten's (V8Q) repairs (which
includes - exhaust work/steering rack).
One A8 is for $995 needs a headlight assy/bumper cover,
Another is asking $2500 in decent shape, has a body dent (not too bad)
tempting...
