Hey Roger, well once again, I'm kicking myself for not grabbing a few  
of those $25 refurbished head units a few yrs back when they dumped  
them.  My Lago car has all rebuilt amps and sounds great, but I'll be  
in the same boat if my head unit craps out.  A good electronics guy  
with a schematic should be able to fix yours.
That said, I've got an Alpine in the 5-speed which I love.  My Ipod  
lives in the glovebox since I can select thru the headunit and  
there's enough music/books on tape to drive to your house and back a  
half dozen times.  If you go this route, verify the unit you are  
looking at will charge your Ipod/whatever when plugged in.  I pulled  
the amps out of the front boxs and had to make up a plywood filler  
since the Bose hole is 4-1/2", and my new Alpine speakers were 4".   
The rears, I removed the whole speaker, but kept the stock Bose  
grill.  It's got XM which I don't subscribe to, but if I lived in the  
boonies and drove alot, probably would.  The rebuilt Bose system has  
way more "presence", but I do love the Alpine and it also sounds  
great.  Think the Alpine I've got with front/rear speakers would be  
around $200-$250........What would Adriana do?........Tom
