[V8] 90 v8 trans problem

hi everyone im new to the list but not new to audi. i have a problem with my 90 v8 auto trans and was wondering  if any one can help me figure out whats wrong with her. the other day i was on my way to work and the trans came out of gear and wont go any more. when we pushed the car i found that it would not roll back in neutral. the local shop  automatically said trans rebuild. im not convinced, im thinking its electrical. any help would be greatly appreciated
