Well, I got some sunny weather/time free so decided to tackle
removing the failing tint on the rear widshield of Lago that's been
bubbling/failing to the point that you couldn't even see thru.
Called my autoglass people, and they said they steam it off, and
wanted $150 to do so. I laughed, and It looked so loose, I just
started pulling, and in 5 min, had it peeled(so I thought).
Apparently most window tint is a 2 ply material, and I had succeeded
in removing the beefier outer layer, and was left with the more
delicate inner layer with the adhesive still on the window. I rented
a wallpaper steamer, and about 5 hrs later, had it removed. I had
the windows/sunroof open, but it was still like a steambath, just
smelled like rotten glue/mylar whatever. Chatted with window guy,
and he said if I had just started with the steamer, I'd probably have
removed the whole thing in 1 piece pretty painlessly, instead of the
tiny scraps that I had to keep trying to get off. Sagging headliner
didn't like the steamy environment either, and got some Cheeto
colored bits falling mostly on the towels, but it was not fun @ all.
I was gonna try the steamer on the spare headliner I've been meaning
to strip, but was pretty sick of it @ that point, but think it might
be the tool to remove the cheeto foam. I really didn't want to
remove the rear seat/rear deck, so getting down low was problematic.
This was a 4.5/5 on the dislike list. Anyway, just wanted to mention
if anyone's got tint they ever want to remove....Tom
