[V8] removal of headlamp switch from column

i have begun to have a short in the headlamp switch on my 90 v8. when i turn head lights on only the parking lights go on and i removed the top cover and wiggled around on the wires and the headlights flicker and sometimes even stay on for a bit. Im thinking if i remove the switch completely bring it inside and take a good look at it i can probably fix it. Got lucky with a few other switches on this beast. I cant really see how the hell to get it out. Does the steering wheel have to come off?  I have to drive at night with the highbeams on they are working fine.
