While it may be possible to do without removing the alternator, I would anyway. A full rebuild is only two bearings more than just the regulator, and is almost certainly due. I would also polish up the slip rings and have the whole assembled unit fully tested at a real rebuild shop. They will spot shorted windings, bad diodes, excess ripple voltage, load test, and more. You will have a new alternator as opposed to a old one with a band aid on it.
