[V8] Clutch Overcenter Spring

This morning I had the clutch temporarily freeze in mid-actuation, followed by finding a broken spring and a plastic bit in the footwell.Since the clutch and brake appear to be functional, I suspect the over center spring has broken.  VAGCAT says the P/N is 4A0721403E.  Called the local dealer who told me that the part is not officially obsoleted, but there is no stock so he suspected it might be.  
 
Has anyone else had a need to investigate this part?  I need to purchase one from the dealer to find out if they are available ...
