Well - I think I found the perfect solution to the stereo problem. I put some isolator transformers on the line-level outputs of the Blaupunkt and all popping and irritating noise is completely gone. I also experimented a little with capacitors and resistors and some combinations made the situation tolerable but the transformers are perfect. I am now quite amazed at how good these old speakers sound with a new front end. If anyone wants/needs to do this, I scavenged some transformers from old modem boards. They are all slightly mis-matched but I really can't hear the difference. I will probably go get some new 600 ohm 1:1 audio transformers though just to do it right. They are only a few dollars a piece and you need four.
The Blaupunkt Toronto 420bt seems like it will be a nice replacement for the old factory unit.
Now - on what to replace a V8 with? I have spent a little time in a turbo All Road and I liked it a lot. I will not talk about how the reason I got to spend time in it was because it broke down on a ski trip and left us in Cascade Idaho (about 50 miles from nowhere). The problem was an idler/tensioner for the fan belt wore out (it had about 150K miles on it). Oddly, it was cheap and easy to find, and easy to replace. The whole deal (minus the trailer to haul it home) was about $60.
I think the Allroads are relatively cheap because people fear them for various reasons, one being the front suspension air springs or whatever they are.
And - no, I am not skiing. We have snow on the ground here in town but not enough to open the mountain.
I am ready to go when the snow hits though!

Yes, I have a 6mt, my wife a 2.7 Tip. The v8 has no turbo lag. The one in my S8 reminds me of out two (long gone) original V8s.
Skiing yet, Dave?
