[V8] 4.2 Oil capacity

Brandon,
The sticking filter o-ring is the result of not having lubed the top of the o-ring when the removed filter was previously installed.
By coating the new filter' o-ring with clean oil it prevents the ring from adhering to the block when removed. This is automotive 101, but as you witnessed, it happens quite often when untrained DIYers have at it.
Years ago when I represented Fo Mo Co, I had to render a decision on an engine replacement (4.9L Straight Six) due to oil loss and subsequent engine failure. The filter was still in place, but the engine's oil was blown out because in addition to the o-ring on the filter, there were two, yes two additional o-rings in place!
The dealer left it untouched so I could take pictures (I have them somewhere in my archives).
Normally I would have offered to help, but this particular customer made two critical mistakes, other than the obvious faux pax with the filter gaskets:
1) he kept driving the truck after having lost all it's oil, thereby destroying the engine
2) he was a super arrogant $/@"#+%, who was going to tell me in no uncertain terms what I was going to do for him! Had he fessed up, and asked for my help, a stroke of the pen would have gotten him a new engine, but instead he went off, with total disrespect. I let him dump his bucket in the hope that he would come around, and come clean, but he turned it into a personal attack. He summed it all up by saying something to the effect that: "You _ _ _ holes at Ford don't stand behind your products!" , claiming all the time that he did nothing wrong and it was just a piece of crap product. At that point I decided that based upon his indignance and total lack of responsibility that it would be a poor investment on behalf of Ford to buy him a new engine. (He wanted it all or nothing and would not contribute one penny to the deal.)
I therefore walked around the back of the truck and said: I am standing behind our product, but unfortunately in this case there was nothing further I could do to assist him.
He was a super arrogant red-neck, and at the time, Ford's dress code was that all reps must wear a dark suit. I remember him making se reference to me being a snot-nosed kid from NEW YORK (exclaimed with a heavy southern drawl), so in effect this guy screwed himself out of a nearly free engine. I was willing to buy him a new engine if he paid the dealer to install it, but like I said he wanted it all or nothin', as he said.
What an idiot! Some folks just don't get it.
Anyway, I hope you found this true story to be a bit entertaining, ................ And I know based upon experience the double o-ring deal will never happen to you again.
Hey, no one"a perfect! I remember pouring 3/4 of a gallon of M1 on the ground because I was interrupted in the middle of an oil change, and thereby forgot to reinstall the drain plug before adding oil! Doh! What a mess - the drain pan overflowed!
Thanks,
ProfessorGT
