[V8] Times....times....times.....

... not sure how many of us are "throwing in the towel" ... but I have to say that for some time now I have been disappointed how little members of this list ... the people you would think would be the ones to understand the inherent value of Audi's first V8-powered flagship ... are expecting to have to pay to add to their collection ... perhaps in the hopes of reselling them when the market turns around.
I purchased my second '91 5-speed (#2) when serendipitously it became available as I was planning to take my original '91 5-speed V8Q daily driver out of service for a timing belt service. As they say about the best laid plans ... wouldn't you know that the timing belt on #2, for which I have receipts for having been recently replaced, decided to break first. Fast forward many years and I still have one more '91 5-speed than I need (not to mention the MT-configured PT it came with) ... but as a good friend of mine did with his 4.2 converted '91 5-speed, #2 will find its way to a pick-n-pull for a donation if that is the way I get the better return. I'm pretty sure I know where that car went ... but I didn't get a chance to make it to Stockton to confirm ...

While the fleet appears to be throwing in the towel, I just ressurected my Lago car from a long sleep/storage, and it's been a joy to drive it. Fresh belt(few yrs ago)/fluids/etc and just hit 116K. Rack decided to go from a minor weep(last 10 yrs) to a full blown hemmorage. I've got a rebuilt rack/hoses that are destined for the 5-speed(when I figure out why it's not running and still in storage), but have no time/motivation to deal with the leak or the 5-speed right now. While I've never used any "stop leak" ever (except maybe in high school on the 69 chevy van), I decided to throw a $24 bottle of Lucas Power Steering stop leak in it since its "guaranteed to stop seal leaks or your money back"......anyway, low and behold, it did what it guaranteed, and the rack has stopped leaking!. I had zip tied a oil diaper to the rack to stop it from getting on the pipes, and removed them today to see no new leakage......It still weeps out of a hose or 2, but for the most part, haven't lost anything from the reservoir in 2 weeks of driving it 30miles and back daily. Not only that, but the viscous red liquid made my clear Mobil DTE13M fluid a nice readable color. Runs as smooth as the day I got it, and can't really see selling it.....someday, it's gonna be worth more than now. Saw a Ford Pinto project car that sold recently for $7K and I'm thinking I'm gonna hold out and see what happens in 10 yrs. Put it in a corner of the barn Roger if you aren't gonna really drive it......Someone 10 yrs from now will hopefully want to have a low mileage V8 for $$$$?. The internet generation will have lots of expendable income and some of them drove this car/similar as kids. If the european market get's hot enough, yeah, I'll bite, as all of us probably would. It'll happen here...just wait.....Tom
