Its a messy job but with the manual transmission anyway not THAT big a deal. I think the automatics are different though so YMMV.
Basic procedure I used:
- remove both distributors, and airfilter/box, ignition wires and tray
- remove fuel lines and right side ignition coil. (maybe left side coil too. why not - its easy.) Remove gas cap so there is no pressure in the tank that forces fuel out the open line.
- remove anything else that is in your way.
- remove both front tires, car on jack stands
- remove rubber splash shield for right side strut tower (where tie rod goes through)
- remove tierods from rack
- remove steering damper
- drain hydraulic oil as good as you can
- from right wheelwell tierod opening, use a bunch of long extensions and a ratchet to reach all the way into the hydraulic line union bolts, and remove them. lots of oil is going to leak out.
- remove the rest of the rack mounting bolts, steering column, etc
- realize that there is no effing way the rack is going to come out through the tierod opening. fit it through there anyway. It does somehow fit.
I got a rebuilt rack from Jorgen. I think it was only about $300.
I also just followed the procedure in the Bentley manual.

Well, my leaking rack continues to go from bad to worse. Was hopeful I could stave off the inevitable with some Luca PS stop leak. But alas, no. Time to deal with it.
Not interested in paying by local mechanic $2500 plus, so what are my options? Hear it’s a total PITA. What would I expect to pay for parts? I think the pump is ok.
