Because, well, I found the answer to your idea! Hah. KInd of. The
rundown:

2G Mitsubishi Eclipse based kit car.
-Mitsu interior, passenger safety shell, windows, door glass, and doors
-Cut off the front and rear of the car
-bolt on front/rear custom subframes and pannels
VW/Audi drivetrain
-Uses FWD vw/audi longitudinal trans axle from passat/a4

"But the biggest news is that the car will be setup for longitudinal
transaxles from VW Passat and Audi A4 cars. These are available online for
as little as $199. Call us for more details before you source one!

Both transaxles fit pretty much the entire range of VW engines, from 1,9l
TDi diesel engines, to the ubiquitous and very powerful 1.8 turbo engines,
all the way to the powerful and unique VR6.

These transaxles will even fit the very latest VW/Audi/Porsche V6 engines,
in particular the diesel variants. Bu we expect most builders will select
the extremely popular 1.8l turbo engine, which is capable of over 400 HP
with just a turbo upgrade kit. Even the relatively obscure VW W8 (yes, a
W8) can fit in the car! "

So now you know what to do with that aging finicky spare V8 in the
driveway! Or, like they mention, a 20v 1.8t or any of many other combos
would be quite exciting as well.
