[V8] Thermostat orientation

I just replaced both the hoses from the engine to the heater core on the 1990 v8q. A bit labor intensive but not too bad. Was _very_ careful not to damage the core or the control valve.

Freddy,
Had the same problem on a v8 once. Ended up being the "Spiral Noodles" that go through the tubes on the heater core (I think they are inside to make the heater core more efficient?). I guess after all those years they just break down and clog everything. I would remove both radiator hoses and back flush the radiator. If some yellowish brown plastic comes out you have found your culprit. You will have to remove the radiator to properly flush it out and then on to the heater core (Really fun job). If you don't do this you will be right back where you started very quickly. Hope this makes sense. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies everyone - it
was just one of those moments where you
question stuff you know the answer to! Spring indeed
goes in toward the
block, in fact although the assembly will allow for reverse
orientation, it
is pretty clear that it won't flow coolant that way.
In other news, I am still running hot. While under
way, the temp is high
but manageable. But when stopped and idling it creeps
up quite high. Upper
rad hose is very hot to touch and the lower is just
warm. Unfortunately, I
am thinking the radiator is plugged - which was my original
fear. Guess I
can't complain after 25 years of good
service. I am also due for t-belt
service (time not miles) and really starting to think it's
all not worth
pursuing. The car has been in the family since day one
and it's in great
shape - so it will be a hard decision to see it go.
Or, I can put a couple
grand into it and keep going!
Cheers -
Fred

Please pardon the silly question, but I am at my shop and
can't look this
up. I am replacing the t-stat in the '90 due to hotter than
normal engine
temps.
Just to be sure, the spring side of the t-stat goes toward
the engine,
right? (I know, silly question- but I have learned
never to assume anything
with the beast!)
TIA
Fred
