I should have mentioned that I am on the third try to replace the gasket. It is only the drivers side. The cam seals, "D" plug and cam plug do not seem to be the problem. I am just having a real hard time getting the gasket to seal I think. I tried using some locktite 518 on it this time. If it works, I will pay dearly when it comes time to do it again...
I always use a torque wrench too - but this time I tightened the lower side first. I am hoping I don't have a warped valve cover. The previous owner has left lots of signs of poor mechanic skills - mostly in the form of stripped out bolt heads and over tightened bolts. It is incredible really. The previous owner (a doctor) paid plenty of money to have the job done right. It was the continuous little problems that finally made him ditch the car.
For example - he paid a small fortune for new oxygen sensors every few hundred miles. The root cause was the original bungs were cut out and new ones were very poorly welded back in - with lots of leaks resulting. This causes the heaters to burn out on the sensor. This may help someone out there - constant failure on a oxygen sensor heater is caused by upstream oxygen leaks.
What is particularly cool about oil leaks on this motor is that they all end up dripping on the turbo, which produces a lovely smell for me and my passengers. I swear, if the rear differential leaked, it would end up on the turbo somehow.

still missing my V8 - but also loving my allroad.

It's best to do this work with a timing belt service. There are lots of YouTube videos that cover these seal changes, a notable example is linked below (skip to about halfway for the seal change part) Good luck!
