Hey, never knew that big nut that holds the strut into the strut tube is called a Gland Nut. Anyway, I've had a set of Bilstein HD's that I got used about 10 yrs ago, and was partly just waiting till Lago's failed/worried that they were too stiff like they were on my Duramax. So, decided to do them on Sunday since I borrowed James Rosser's long tube socket to remove the Boge's and I had recently bought that cut out socket to remove the top nut. First side had a hard time getting shock to center in the hole. Turning the wheel just moved it side to side scrunched up against the back. Ended up using some ratchet straps and got it centered/installed/threw on the new mounts that some of us were apart of that group buy some time back from CAC.
Side B was totally centered and I thought I'd be done in minutes....except for the Gland Nut(big brass ring that holds strut into housing) had messed up threads, and would only go about 2 turns. Verified the strut tube was fine by spinning on the stock one effortlessly. They had previously been installed using channellocks or pipe wrench, and when I checked, it's a little out of round also. Guy who installed them was strong....possibly a roofer.....HAAAA
Anyway, I called Bilstein, and they don't call them HD's anymore, they're B6 or B8. The Gland nut is $30 and the seal is $15 + shipping. Know it's a long shot, but wondering if anyone's got one laying around? Bilstein will rebuild the shocks, so can't really see anyone having a spare, but had to ask as I'm "frugal".
Here's the pic of the Bilstein Gland Nut tool I made from 12" 1-1/2" galvanized with a 1-1/2x2" adapter and cut and ground the adapter to fit the slots. Fit's like it was made in Germany. Wish I could claim credit, but someone on some BMW site gave me the idea. I could be dangerous if I had a milling machine....Tom
