>From the Service Training Guide P40/41:

The Hall sensor signal is used to recognize ignition point for cylinder number one for starting the engine. The signal is also used for cylinder selective knock control and determine injections timing sequence.

Signal Failure:
The injection sequence is started via the ignition timing signal. The ignition timing is retarded by 16 degrees and knock control is stopped.

Self-Diagnosis
Self-Diagnosis recognizes two faults, break / short to positive and short to ground.

Note:
The engine can be started if the hall sensor signal is not present. In this case it is possible that the injection sequence is delayed by 360 degrees.

So to be clear, you are running with the timing severely retarded, knock control stopped, and this will most definitely have an impact on overall performance and fuel economy. Once the knock sensors are stopped the ECU will automatically enrich the fuel mixture. (P50/51 Service Training Guide)
