I went to the wrench this morning for oil change and tire rotation for
the V8. I also wanted to have some other diagnostics done chiefly the
slight first gear stutter that is slowly getting a worse. The outcome
isn't good.
The stutter is a failing first gear clutch pack. Worse still the
transmission oil and the engine oil cooler lines are corroding badly and
will need to be replaced sooner rather than later. The wrench is
concerned that the transmission may without much announcement, simply
grenade. In addition it is close to new rotor time on all four which
will blow a hole in a grand if I am lucky.
So, all in all, I may be at a serious decision point in maintaining the
aging Audi "fleet". The 100 CS will likely go through another
inspection now, but that will mean that next year it might not as the
rear main seal is leaking rather seriously. At some point it will simply
not pass state inspection.
The V8 must have a reman transmission and other things, likely blowing
away five grand ANYway.
I am not in love with any of the options and will likely put the V8 in
the garage while I think about it, and we'll just rely on the 100CS
Avant which despite a bit of weaping, just rolls along.

Oh, yeah, and considering all of this I'm far less keen even thinking
about a V8/Audi 100CS swap. Although John said today the ONLY way to do
it is to have the donor car present when the swap was made. And since I
already have a V8 with a known good engine.....ahhhh, ah....NOPE!
