I had a similar issue with wanting to re-ring my V8. Popular wisdom said it could not be done. I did it. And it wasn't hard but I had to find a guy willing to replace rings without removing the crank.
In the end it was not that expensive.
The transmission as you know was widely used. The transmission part is all that needs work, you can leave the rest (Torsen and differential) alone. Maybe replace seals if you can get them but thats it.
For the transmission simply replacing the soft parts is probably all you need. Those parts are available and any competent shop can do it. It really is no different than any other transmission.
Put another way, don't rebuild it, just repair the problem.
The allroad transmission has a similar problem. A drum commonly breaks, but the rest of the unit is usually good. There is a guy here that will just repair the drum. He even reuses the friction material if it is still good - and it usually is. His repairs cost I think less than $400. The part is only about $100. Add to that R&R.
If you are curious you can google for videos showing how to repair the reverse drum on a 5hp19. It ain't rocket science. Your mechanic sounds plenty smart enough to do this.
So it is completely realistic to save the car if you really want to. You just need to be a little creative.
It may even be worth it to find a nice cheap used transmission and have it repaired so you would just have to swap it out. Maybe save a little time and money in the long run that way since the mechanic could take his time on the rebuild.
