And then, as I am always looking (it's an addiction), I found a 1996 A6
Avant in Ft. Lauderdale with 30,000 miles from new. It's the "proper"
color: green although the interior is light gray or white-ish. It
looks pristine and supposedly was an elder man's car from new, one
owner, and from California. I have asked for some details. It's a 2.8
litre V6 which is what my 100 is, so I know EVERYthing that can or will
go wrong with it,and when as I've already been there and done that. The
100 we have had 39,000 miles on it from new when I picked it up in
Kansas City in 2001. Naturally they want about twice what ANY book
value of the car says it's worth so nothing will come of it in all
liklihood.
The V8 goes to the wrench on Wednesday for a general overview and
oil/filter change. I'll discuss the fantasy project with him then, while
he is sitting down.
Yesterday I rolled the 100 out of the garage so I could get the trash
ready for pickup this morning. It started and I drove it the half mile
to the little store to get some trash pick-up stickers. Naturally, it
ran perfectly, shifted perfectly and made me wonder once again: why not
just do the body, fix the leaks and drive this thing another 100,000k or
until it just stops catastrophically? That'd probably be the cheaper
thing to do in the end, and the final results would be the same with a
whole lot less stress.
But fantasizing when one is afflicted with the Car Syndrome is a normal
symptom, also.

On the S6, I say buy one that has a good body but needs work. Get it cheap. Have your trusted guy do the work to your specs. You then know exactly the status of everything. To me stacks of receipts mean the car has been worked on a lot and that is a bigger negative than a car that has just been driven for x miles without visiting the dealer on a regular basis.
