“A8 D3 2004-07, belt era pop cans are a good bet. Parts aplenty on ebay,
VCDS tells u all u need to know and they are Checker-cab solid.”
Jeez, I was hoping this was true. Is it really? I read a bevy of owner
reviews here:
https://www.edmunds.com/audi/a8/2004/consumer-reviews/pg-1/?sorting=CONFIDENCE
The overall statistics belie a really disturbing pattern of electrical
problems. Maybe the drive train is a-ok but the electrics still a real
issue? There are reviews back to late '03 on that link; I really weight
the ones from then to '05 and they are uniformly bad despite the
first-glance overall high rating.
Did the problem get worked out at some point, or...?
I ask in all seriousness as next year I was looking for an older, premium
sedan to replace a really great '02 Lexus ES we have. It runs great, looks
good, has worn incredibly well. About 300k now. I was thinking to hand it
off to a step-son and get a similar vintage LS430 for her (wife) to drive.
But if there was a really reliable Audi V8 I could get instead, I'd be
excited. I don't mind maintenance as long as it's not "strand her on the
road" kind of issues that are reported here.
I'm not getting rid of the V8/5, it's getting a thorough rebuild this
winter as I described and then will be a garage queen mostly.
