Likewise, I have found if any work is needed on the clutch or tranny, the
best thing to do on an A2 is lift the whole engine-tranny out of the car. It
takes less time than fighting with the tranny leaving the engine in. Having
removed and replaced engines in A2's several times now, and adopting tricks
learned on this list (using a long extension through the fender wells to
remove axle screws, etc.) It just makes so much sense, and permits fixing
other things normaly impossible top get at. Good time to deal with any
steering rack work. I have a hoist installed in the garage that makes it go
real easy.

Only pulled an engine from an A1 jetta once and took it out through the top.
Didn't know any better. Didn't seem too difficult.
