Hi Jon,

I replaced my motor with a stock one from GEX.  I have 30K miles on it with no problems.  They were not the easiest people to work with but I have not problems with the motor.  They have a web page gex.com.

You might want to do a search on the vanagon.com site to see others comments about gex.

As to your question about a motor upgrade, I thought about that also.  I drove a 1.9l TD motor in a Westy.  The acceleration was fantastic.  The negatives are that the standard trany was also in the van so the top speed was the same.  If you upgrade the motor than I would also install an air cooled Vanagon trany.  Also the mileage will suffer, though I did not get an answer when I asked what the mileage was.  If I was to do it again I think that I would pay the extra and upgrade to a NA 1.9l, and install the AC trany.
