[Vwdiesel] why does diesel residue cover my vanagon tailgate?

This is very common, it appears, from the number of anguished posts on this
list. It seems to be the result of oil leaks; either blow-by out the
filler/dipstick or just plain drippage from somewhere. The "burble" of
turbulent air behind the vanagon ensures it will fly up and stick on the
hatch instead of flying back to that SUV right on your tail where the oil
should go.
