I looked heavily into this (going in with no experience with engine
swaps).
I looked at two engines to replace the 1.6NA in my '84 rabbit. One was
the 1.9TD(IDI, P/N: 028 100 017 R). They state this is a direct upgrade
for rabbit/jetta/etc.., which should make the swap easier.
I also wanted to check out the 1.9TDI with mechanical management (P/N:
038 100 021 TDD). I don't see why you couldn't fit this one in a A1.
I would stay away from the real 1.9TDI (like in new A3/A4's) unless you
are prepared to wire _all_ the electrical for this engine (example: gas
pedal is not mechanical, trigger connected to computer).
Keep in mind this is from my personal research (many hours though) and
parsing through listservs (there is a Westy diesel swap listserv on
yahoo..). I have no personal hands-on experience with any of this. :)
In the end it was just too expensive to justify for the rabbit, unless I
wanted to go all-the-way for restoration, show car. I would rather take
that 4k and put a down payment on an A3 TDI golf and start tweaking that. :)
What I would _really_ like is to import a UK Golf diesel. They have a
150BHP/236torque(@1900RPM!!) TDI that still gets like 52mpg/av. *druel* Out race
and out gas-mileage perform everything out there. Plus the 6-speed
manual.
