Thanks to all who responded on the temp sensor question.
Turns out it was ok and I was tricked by a defective NEW GERMAN t-stat.

I had despaired finding the problem and disected an old pump I had under the
bench to see if I could examine the impeller on the pump without removing it
from the car.
I saw that I could get a good view of the impeller through the t-stat
oppening, and feel it, and even tack weld it if it was loose on the shaft,
all without removing the pump. It was the good cast iron impeller and in
excellent condition.

[Sidebar-- you can see if the impeller is the cast or stamped variety and
the condition, without removing the pump.]

While I had the t-stat out, I took it (the brand new one) and the one out of
the cadaver, and boiled them in a pot on the stove with wife's candy
thermometer.

The old one opened at 180, the new one at 200+, they were identical german
units, both marked 87C.

I installed the old one and all is well now.

Don't install without testing!

Sandy
