Hi Harmon --

Check out the TDI-conversion list on yahoo.  It's for folks that want
to substitute a TDI into their vanagon.  A lot of your questions are
answered in the archives.  As I recall, there's a short run -- a couple
of years -- where the TDI bolts up to the older engines.  From somewhere
around 2000 it doesn't fit any more.  There are some conversations about
conversion from the electronic to a mechanical pump also, it's currently
not cheap and no-one gives explicit directions on how to do it yourself.
Apparently it _can_ be done with a 1.9 TD pump, it has to be
re-calibrated for the much higher injection pressures.  That's about all
I remember.
