  Mostly because the injection timing is more precise in timing than spark.
Spark takes longer to create a flame front it seems than spontaneous
ignition, makes sense.  For a diesel to inject that early, it would tend
to tear itself apart.  Remember a good share of a gas engine's burn
happens on past BDC and the exhaust stroke!
