[Vwdiesel] injection pump timing

Hi Kris --
Good fun, huh?
I'm assuming you have a 1.6TD. If you have a 1.9 the rules are
different and I don't know 'em!
First thing is to put the locking pin back in, and tighten down the pump
gear properly. Then you need to get the belt on so that
1) the flywheel is at TDC
2) the pump gear mark notch lines up with the mark on the sheet metal
3) the timing belt tension is correct.
Now install the timing stuff in the back of the pump. Preload a couple
mm. If I recall correctly you turn the engine backwards to where the
dial stops moving, zero it, and then turn back to TDC. Now the dial
shows what your timing is set at. To change it, loosen all four of the
pump mounting bolt (three under the gear, one under and to the engine
side of the pump near the injection line end), and turn the pump to get
the desired timing.
Hope that helps!
