Gary and group,
I have not had a chance to measure the thickness of the old cylinder head g=
asket yet. I can't seem to find my caliper. Would it be safe to assume tha=
t I can use a 2 notch to put back on the engine if that is what came off of=
it?
Also, looking at ETKA (parts program) I see that there are 6 different head=
gaskets listed (part numbers):
068 103 383 ES (1.4 mm 1 notch)
068 103 383 ET (1.5 mm 2 notch) <-- This is the one I think I need to get =
since I have the 11mm h=
ead bolts
068 103 383 FA (1.6 mm 3 notch)
068 103 383 FL (1.4 mm 1 notch)
068 103 383 FM (1.53 mm 2 notch)
068 103 383 FN (1.61 mm 3 holes)
Do you (group included) concur?
Also, should I get new head bolts to put in, or can I reuse the old ones. T=
his is my first engine teardown/rebuild so please bear with me!!!!
Well since I'm asking questions, here's another one...what is the proper ti=
ming belt to use (mfr recommendations, etc.) I only see one listed on ETKA =
and it's part number 069 109 119 E. Is that the right one? Should I get a n=
ew tensioning roller (068 109 243 F) while I am at it? Does anyone know wh=
ere I can get a timing belt cover (068 109 191 C)? Are they still available=
for purchase from places like VWparts.com? Is it critical that I have the=
t-belt cover?
One more set of questions...does anyone know the part number for a reverse =
switch for a 5 speed tranny and also where I can get new bushings for the s=
hift-linkage w/o paying an arm and a leg. I'm not looking to put something =
super-duty in there, just to replace the worn out ones that are currently i=
n there.
Thanks gang
Mikey

Mike,
Yes, the notches indicate how thick the gasket is. The gasket is block
dependent and not head dependent. The thickness required is determined
by how far the pistons protrude above the block.
There are three choices:
1 notch... piston up to 0.82mm above block
2 notch... between 0.83 - 0.92mm
3 notch... over 0.93mm
