  Two things, as Roger pointed out, are the glow plugs staying on long
enough?  Slow glows I think are almost 30 seconds and fast are like 11
or something.  The other is timing.  If you push the advance knob in half
way, after it's just started does it die or almost die?  If that's the case
along
with it just barely starting with the knob all the way out and ONLY starting
if it's ALL the way out, it sounds like the timing may be a bit retarded.
You wouldn't happen to have a yellow dot pump that's timed to non
yellow dot specs would you?  (Don't look for yellow paint, it's all gone
by now, you need the last 3 digits + letters from the end of the VW
part number of the pump.  107 A is a yellow dot pump.)
