You want one shim in the lifter. Pull the existing one, read it for thickness,
and get the size you'll need. After a while I had a small collection of them
from old heads, and from making adjustments. In the 80s, the kits weren't
exactly cheap. You can use a micrometer or caliper, but I've always been
able to read the thickness etched in the shim.
Consider using a neopreme valvecover gasket.
