Even in Washington DC I used the block heater IF BELOW 40 deg. F. I used
a timer and it got about 1 hour at 40 deg., 2 hrs if at 20, and 3 hrs if
below 20 and 4 hrs if really cold 10 deg? Anyway, I got much quiter
warm-ups, window defrosting w/in a couple minutes, the oil light
extinguished on start-up (using 15W-40), and much less
emissions/smoking. I figured it helped the engine last longer and use
less fuel. For 2 hours, its about 10 cents worth of power. I found that
extending the block heater time did not get the engine any warmer.
i.e.equilibrium was reached.
