  I broke a mainshaft in my 914 once, gently (seriously!) pulling away from a
stoplight.  I still had 3rd - 5th.  Did you look under the hood, while
someone
moved the shifter, to make sure the linkage is all tight and doing what it
should?
  As said, clutch is another possibility but they usually make some kind of
noise, but not always.
  Transmission can be from $50 to $350 or so and labor is probably around
$200 or $250.  Time seems like 4 hrs, or is it 2 hrs?  Been a long time since
I punched a clock on one!  Oh yeah it's an 85.  I'd have to look if that
comes
out the bottom or out the top with the engine.  Surely not!  Ewwww!
