[Vwdiesel] Help, no start after running hard

Morning all, I am in need of some quick advice.
Due to running late this morning, I decided to stop by the 7-11 near my
office to grab a quick bite. I had been running warm on the way in this
morning as I was rushing and revving high, especially up the 4 mile hill
climb I have, temp gauge was at about the 10:30 o'clock position (red line
on mine is at about 11 o'clock and it normally runs at about 9 o'clock).
When I pulled into the 7-11 there were lots of people so instead of doing
what I normally do (i.e. leave the car running and go inside) I turned it
off. When I came out a few minutes later it failed to fire up. I cranked it
over for a couple of minutes with no luck until the battery was really
dying. Lots of smoke when cranking.
It fired up fine this morning from cold after short glow cycle. Did I
overheat it by running it hard and then shutting it off? Should I just wait
and try in a bit when it has cooled down?
It is down hill from the 7-11 to my office and I was thinking that I could
just push it out of the parking lot and roll start it. However I would
prefer that it started normally on it's own.
Any advice anyone could give would be fantastic.
