[Vwdiesel] Battery Charging Question

One thing to check which is what happened to mine- the electrical contact
between diodes and the voltage regulator in a bosch alternator can get corroded
over time. Pull the regulator- two little screws on the usually black oval bit
on the back of the alternator. It is an integral brush holder/voltage
regulator. You can see a smallish strip of metal that the reg pushes against
when in the proper position on the left IIRC. Either it or the reg body gets
slight corrosion and can give poor contact. This is what fixed mine once when
the light was giving me a dim flicker at idle, fine otherwise at highway
speeds, but the battery never had a full charge, especially at night when i had
BIG lights turned on (600w), and the car would barely start the next day.
The trunk switch usually has a detent that the switch can be hooked into to
render it inoperative- for carrying loads in which the trunk lid is open I
guess. Push it all the way in and to the side and it will hook there. If the
area it goes against has no raised bump, it will stay on too, i glued on a
smallish piece of rubber gasket material to give it enough push to stay off.
This was killing the battery for me when I first got the car. Had a devil of
a time to find what it was.
