Going a bit further...
* Most of the VW diesels call for 15W40 oil for most temperatures,
changing to 10W30 when the temp really drops.
* The lower number refers to the "thickness / viscosity" at low
temperatures (thick oil doesn't flow as well and provide protectin at
startup) and the higher number refers to the "thickness" at high
temperatures i.e. high temperatures, heavy load, high speeds; (thin oil
tends to break down... never generalize... low-viscosity synth oil is
"supposed" to break down less than low-viscosity dino oils).
* The "spread" between the low and high numbers is achieved by
additives... generally, the bigger the spread, the higher the additive
content, which is (generally) to be avoided.
* Synth oils are particularly good with turbo applications... if the
engine has been run hard (and the turbo is super-heated) and the
engine/turbo hasn't been allowed to cool down before shutoff, the oil
contained within the turbo ends up "coking" with the excessive heat and
doesn't provide a lot of protection at startup time.
'nuff said (BTW, I learned most of this thru this mailing group).
