You're thinking of a receiver hitch.  That way you can put different
ends into it.  Numbers come from the class number.  Most smaller
ones are class 2.  Most trucks have class 3 and there are several
class 4 out there.  Class pertains to the tongue weight it's capable
of.  A class 1 can handle a small child or so.  ;-)
