[Vwdiesel] Starter Motor

While cranking the engine it suddenly stopped and I get the  whirring
sound now---permanently. Have to remove battery cable to stop the
whirring. The cure used to be to smack the starter with a hammer but this
easy fix no longer works.

Is this a solenoid problem? Anything I can get parts for?
