[Vwdiesel] Prime Problem

The transfer pump, inside the injection pump, has a limited volume, and
being a vane pump, also likes to be "wet" with fuel in order to work well,
especially with some miles on it. It takes a lot of cranking even with no
problems, to fill the filter, therfore it should be filled before attempting
a start.

Any time I open the fuel system, I always draw fuel up through it before
attempting to start. I installed a rubber "squeeze-bulb" hand primer in the
line between the tank and filter on the old car a few years ago because it
occasionaly will go dry, depending on the angle I park it. A few squeezes,
and we're away. It pushes fuel in to the pump, and air back to the tank,
resulting in a complete prime of the transfer pump.
