Not to split hairs, but the original GTI came with a 1.6 8v in Europe
from '78-??, a 1.8 8v in North America from '83-92, and a 2.0 8v in NA
from '96-01. The VR6 came ashore in '95, and is still with us, as is
the 1.8 20v Turbo- since '99.5 or so. I'm not well-versed on the
rather rare GTI-badged Sciroccos, but I believe they were all 1.6 8v.
The OPTIONAL 1.8 16v was in NA GTIs '87-89, and the 2.0 16v option was
'90-92. That's only 6 years of 16 valves- the shortest run of any of
the engines (never mind the 2.0/1.8 split) offered under the GTI badge
in the 20 years we've been able to get them.
When the 16v GTI was available, it cost a good bit more than the 8v
model, which is why they are rather rare and sought after now. All
that makes the 16v something other than the "typical" GTI motor.
TMI, eh?
