I know that with Volvo the GL stood for Grande Luxe (or Great Luxury), so
maybe the European thinking about this was something along the lines of . .
.

L - Luxury Package
GL - Grand Luxury Package
GLS - Grand Luxury Special Package
GLX - Grand Luxury Xtra Package

It is all just marketing.

My original question about the L was based on my curiosity of whether it
denoted any differences in the diesel engine, i.e. cold weather package or
some other diesel related upgrades that didn't come standard on the base
diesel.

The fact that it even got me curious shows that the marketing works. You
look at the badges and you wonder what he has on his car that you don't.
Makes you want the "upgrades" that come with the badge. I was thinking maybe
he has some neat diesel options that I would like, not that I'm unhappy with
my NA, 80 BHP, 6 cylinder VW diesel engine.
