It'll never start if you have the hard lines disconnected. ;-) There's no
need
to do it anyway. Tighten them all down, crank it a little, then if you
really
want to, loosen one about a half turn and crank. It should spritz or leak
depending on how loose you get it. Fully loosened, the amount of fuel
that comes out isn't much but realize it only flows one quart through
one of those tubes in about an hour (at 60mph), which is about 2500rpm.
So that's 1/75,000 of a quart. That works out to about 1/80 ml per firing,
which is every other stroke of the piston.
If valve timing, pump timing, glow plugs, and compression are all good,
pump is full, air filter clear and cranking speed good, in a room temperature
shop, it takes about 20 - 30 seconds of cranking to start.
If you're sure all is well and it won't start, blow compressed air into the
fuel tank while opening the bleed valve and the return line. When both
are bubble free then connect. Of course make sure the pump is full at
this time. This is how I filled the pump when I had troubles. I used what
ran out the return line to dribble it full while I was at the filler neck
blowing
into the tank. Not a pretty sight!
Otherwise I'd suspect the pump is 180 off, if you gave it that possibility.
