[Vwdiesel] '91 Jetta TD Heating System

Verify first that the heater core is plugged. Perhaps its a blend door, A/C
control head, or vacuum or vacuum motor issue. Remove the heater core hoses
(engine side) and blow air through it to check for blockage. Ask others about
using radiator flush on it. All I know is that Bentley states that the A/C must
be discharged and the A/C evaporator removed first, since the heater core sits
behind it. A bunch of other stuff has to be removed too. I have had the heater
core replaced (free) under VW's recall (no mileage or time limit since its a
NHTSA mandated safety recall), twice, I believe (VW must have not known it got
replaced once before by them). It only took them about an hour, so they must
have some neat trick to avoid A/C refrigerant discharge and evacuation. I do not
believe they discharged my A/C (no evidence of it being done). They neglected to
put a new steel strap on that holds the evaporator housing together, and left
the old one just cut and hanging in there.
Others on the list have said that removing the heater core is such a pain that
they just cut the plastic housing open for access and tape it back up in a neat
manner.
Good luck.
