[Vwdiesel] Exaust!

Safety inspection time was approaching rapidly
so I had to put a new exaust system in the
diesel Wabbit. I cut the old system out with
a recip saw. Put my homemade tool on the outboard
spring clip and managed to get it off, then I
could rotate the pipe enough to get the other
one off. The problem came when it was time to
put the new pipe on the manifold. I rotated the
pipe enough to get the inboard spring clip on,
but could not get the outboard clip far enough
open to get it on. Finally remembered someone
talking about a "C" clamp. Got a 6" C clamp
and opened it all the way. Found a flat spot
on the upper edge of the exaust manifold, right
under the intake manifold. Screwed the clamp
closed and the outboard clip went on. Neither
clip was in exactly the right place, but
wiggling the pipe caused them to seat properly.

It was so late and I was so tired I did not
replace the conical gasket on the manifold.
The one on there looked good and seemed to
seat fine on the pipe. Was this a mistake?

The other lesson learned was to make the
spring clip tool out of larger diameter
eye bolts, and use washers to distribute
the pressure of the bolt as it open up
the clip.

Mu two cents!
