I have 1 & 3/4 of these engines (not quite an entire spare).  They actually
are identical to the 5cyl, but with an extra cylinder in the middle.  Like
the 5cyl TD, the pump is driven off the back of the cam, the WP is inside the
timing cover and used for tensioning the t-belt, oil pump is in the front of
the engine driven by the crank.  Many other parts are shared between 4, 5 & 6
cyl VW diesel, like valvetrain components, rods & pistons, injectors,
glowplugs...
Some 6 cyl specific parts are pricey in the USA, 'cause they only seem to be a
vailable from the Volvo stealership.  Service parts (plugs, filters, valve
shims, seals, T-belt & WP...) are inexpensive & readily available
aftermarket.  HTH.
