[Vwdiesel] Fw: broken head bolt

If you are going to drill, try to find a drill bit with left hand spirals.
Once the center of the bolt is removed by drilling the hole for the
easy-out, the drill bit which turns counter-clockwise in this case usually
just backs the bolt out. I guess enough pressure gets relieved and the bolt
gets a little smaller. I do this lots.
You used a fairly new vice grip, whomped the bolt top a good one or two,
and squeezed the vice-grip (name brand, not taiwan cheapies for this job) on
so tight it broke a sweat, right? You can usually turn with much more force
with a good vice grip compared to an easy out, so don't give up too easily.
Once you break an easy out off in the hole, it's uphill from there. Any
friends that can weld? If it was me, I would weld a nut on the stud first
before trying the drill method. Potential for destruction is less with the
welder, and you can weld on a pretty good size nut to get good purchase-
just drop a close fitting washer over the broken head bolt first to keep any
weld boogers off the head sealing surface. One disclaimer: you do need
someone who can weld reasonable well to do this, use lots of amperage.
