[Vwdiesel] TD swap black smoke from using NA exhaust?

I recently had an 86 Jetta TD engine swapped into my Caddy. Runs fine,
much faster than the 1.6 NA. Engine starts fine, no start smoke and runs
very smooth.
Basically the NA exhaust was welded back to the downpipe as a matter of
convenience. I plan to get rid of the stock downpipe and exhaust, opting
for a 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 system.
Meanwhile I am wondering if the current restrictive exhaust is causing
black smoke under load. I get the smoke from about 1/2 throttle under
load especially bad in 4th and 5th. Puts out quite a smoke screen. My
thought is that the restrictive exhaust is not allowing the turbo to
spool up fast enough causing overfuelling. Probably makes sense to change
exhaust before tampering with max fuel screw on pump.
