[Vwdiesel] Glow Plug Problems

Oh, by "mount the lug on the stud" I mean take off its nut and put the lug (ring connector) on the stud and replace the 8 MM nut. That simple. I bet your glow plug fuse fractured. About every three years or so, mine breaks right down the middle and it looks good, unless you look real close. Carry a spare.

Also get a little in-line fuse holder, amall amperage fuse (500 ma?) and one of those crimp lug terminals and some, I dunno the guage size, thin wire to wire it. SOLDER the crimp lug to the wire and mount the lug on the #4 glow plug stud (the one that gets the big power wire too). Install the fuse holder and a real low amperage fuse on the wire. Wire tie the wire neatly. Run the wire to the interior. Mount the 12 V (red, if you like) LED on the Dash (I put mine in the center of one of those plastic plugs that fit switch holes in the Jetta on the dash). Ground the other end of the LED under the dash somewhere convenient. Now, paint the top of the glow plug relay (silver or gold) for easy identification. If the plugs ever stick on, simply unplug the relay (yank it out). Then fix the problem.

Started, white smoke. I replaced the glow plugs with Bosch units less than a year ago. Did not replace the relay. Haven't pulled the plugs to test them yet. Since the first set of JC Whitney plugs blew out in less than 6-months, I now suspect the plugs may be frequently cycling on and off, leading to their short life. I would like some advice on what I should check for. I'm planning to replace all the plugs and the relay to circumvent this problem in the future. I would also like to add a lit toggle switch which would indicate glow plug activity and have the ability to control glow plug function with the toggle switch. Does anyone ghave wiring, fuse and switch specs I would need to accomplish this? Thanks!
