Nate, you asked me how much my 1.6TD swap into Caddy cost. It's here and
some information that might be useful for those considering a 1.6TD
engine;
With my Caddy, was concerned about squeezing in a larger engine and added
power steering/aircon. It helped to make up my mind when I found a used
86 Jetta 1.6TD engine in good shape from a farmer near Vancouver for
U.S.$250. Farmer's son happened to be a mechanic so I had him do the
swap. He replaced all engine seals, water pump, tensioner, drive belts,
hoses, timing belt, fuel hoses, added K&N filter system, resurfaced
flywheel, new clutch, changed fuel and oil filters, changed a motor
mount, installed my supplied power steering components, cut and weld
original NA exhaust to fit, relocate shift linkage and timed engine. He
charged me $1000 labor (25-32 hours labor he said) and $400 in parts.
Labor charge would be much higher if done in a regular shop. Parts
probably a bit more expensive in Canada as they have higher taxes than in
U.S. Engine runs well, was delighted to find fast glow plugs (takes only
5 seconds to start). Much more power but I want a less restrictve exhaust
which will be done soon. Also I find my partially blocked old radiator is
not up to the task of stonger engine. Will need to replace it.
Unfortunately no room for bigger radiator. For those in need of more
power, one can squeeze more out of the 1.6TD engine by adding
intercooler and tweaking with the fueling. The German GTD version of Golf
with a similar setup achieves 80HP. According to Diesel Des, whom we
haven't heard from in awhile, 12.5 PSI boost is standard for GTD. If
you increase boost and power beyond that then Raceway studs mandatory.
Milton.
