The PO of my old diesel did this. It worked ok but was a PITA to put it
mildly. He used a steel button, and if it was pressed for a long period of
time i.e. more than 3-5 seconds would start to heat up. So on cold days if I
wasn't wearing my gloves I might burn my fingers. I don't think that the
switch or the wire was really rated for the voltage that was running through
it.
He said he did the bypass because VW designed the glow system to work in
cold climates and that the length of time that the relay kept the glow bus
charged was unnecessary and wore out the plugs faster than need be.
I removed it and hooked it back up correctly and was never unhappy that I
did, even if it meant replacing the dirt cheap glow plugs more frequently.
